EDITORS DAILY CRIMSON :-I beg leave to submit for publication the following summary of the work done by the Harvard Total Abstinence League during the present college year. In this time three public meetings were held at which addresses were delivered by Prof. Wm. James, Ex-Governor John P. St. John, Hon. John B. Finch, Col. Geo. W. Bain, and General Swift. The total number of members on the roll is 148. Number now in college, 105. Forty-nine men have been added, and four have been removed through resignations.
It was found advisable in January last to Ievy an assessment of twenty-five cents per member to meet current expenses. The whole amount received during the year was $30.31; amount paid out, $27.41, leaving a balance of $2.90 in the treasury. From this showing many will conclude that it is truly "the day of small things" with the league, and such is undoubtedly the case. But when we remember that it is still young in years and that it was founded in the midst of bitter opposition in a university where moderate drinking is very prevalent, and of whose large faculty the name of but one member, all honor to him for it, is to be found on the roll, we have no reason to be discouraged with the year's work. Since all that the society requires of a man is to take his place in the ranks and then stand, our influence must be largely in proportion to our numbers, and we, therefore, most earnestly invite all men of total abstinence principles to at least give the league the weight of their names.
