Dr. Sargent, of the Harvard College gymnasium, is not in favor of training men for specialties. He says "I do not want to train up a small body of specialists, of gymnasts whose ability would equal that of professionals. I did that once in another college, and the result was that it practically killed general athletics there. The interest there has almost wholly died out, because the standard of excellence in these special departments has never been equalled since." The doctor is satisfied with the physical improvement of the Harvard athletes. He has made over 550 examinations so far this year, and will make about 200 more before July. Many of the men take two examinations and some take three. It takes fifteen minutes to measure each man, and about fifteen minutes more to make out the exercise book which tells them what apparatus to use.
