In a recent debate on the subject of classical studies among Dartmouth alumni, a graduate present said he had no sympathy with any movement intended to foster the study of Greek and Latin. He was a follower of Charles Francis Adams in that respect. The three greatest masters of English literature on the other side-Shakespeare, Erskine, and Cobbett-knew little Latin and less Greek. The same was true of Whittier, Greeley and Pinckney on this side."
