"BOOKS AND HOW TO USE THEM; Practical Hints for Readers and Students. By J. C. Van Dyke: New York. Fords, Howard & Hulburt." This books contains many suggestions in regard to reading which will be found especially valuable by college students and others who have to make constant use of books. The author's treatment of such topics as novel-reading, skipping, system in reading, note-books, memorizing, night-reading, exercise and choice of books is remarkably practical. The chapter on the use of the public library is perhaps the most useful of all in the book. Many of the author's suggestions are novel, but he is not dogmatic in his assertions and simply asks a trial. His style is vigorous and attractive and he evidently talks from experience.
