It appears that the bone of contention was the inequality of the length of the boats. Harvard's was about five feet longer than Yale's. A start with the bows on a level would cause each Yale man to be behind the corresponding Harvard man, causing the former much inconvenience, while if at the start, the sterns were even, and the decision rendered according to the bows, Yale's course would be diminished five feet. - [Deleware College Review.
