While at the University of Cambridge all the heads of colleges except two - the provost of King's and the president of Queen's - are uniformly known as "masters," there is a curious variety of title at Oxford. The head of Christ Church is the dean, who is in fact the dean of the cathedral of Oxford; All Souls, Keble, New and Wadham have wardens; Brasenose, Jesus and all the halls, or smaller colleges, have principals; Exeter and Lincoln have rectors; Oriel, Queen's and Worcester have provosts; Corpus Christi, Magdalen, St. John's and Trinity have presidents; University (the oldest college), Balliol and Pembroke have masters.
