W. C. Camp, the trainer of the Yale foot-ball team has recently been laid up with an injured knee.

Yale defeated Columbia Saturday by a score of 8 goals and 4 touchdowns to 2 safety touchdowns.

Negotiations for a race of fifteen miles between the bicyclists John Keen and John S. Prince have been given up.

The prizes given by the Bicycle Club consist of a shield of gold bearing the monograms of the club and enclosed in a rim of gold appropriately inscribed.

The receipts of the Harvard Base Ball Association last season were over $4600. With an enclosed ground they would have been over twice as much. [Globe.

The late Samuel E. Fitz bequeathed two-thirds of his residuary estate to Harvard College for the use of the medical school.

Profs. Lyon and Toy have purchased a section of the Rice estate, on Brattle street, with the mansion house and remodeled it for residence.

Mr. Charles A. Dana of the New York Sun has induced Mr. William Falconer of the Botanic Garden to become his gardener at Glen Cove.

The subject for the next debate of the Harvard Union will be : "Resolved, That representatives in Congress and in the Legislature should vote according to the wishes of their constituents, rather than in accordance with their own convictions."

The Harvard class of 1856 has tendered to the governor-elect, who was one of their members, a "pocket celebration," which will take place at Young's Thursday evening. The reception committee is headed by Charles Francis Adams, Jr., and other prominent members of it, and Mr. George B. Chase and Mr. George Blagden.

In his annual report Gen. Merrit in command at West Point says in regard to "hazing" at that institution, that while his predecessors for the last 25 years have reported at one time or another that the practice of hazing had been broken up, it is his experience that they have, without exception, been mistaken. He says : "By repressive measures the evil has been at times restricted to its lowest limits, but has never been eradicated. Just the moment repression has ceased the brutal custom has sprung up with new features of brutality. While I do not favor threats to repress disorders or pledges iron cadets as a means of eradicating violations of the regulations. I am certain that the best means of maintaining discipline in any organization is the certainty of summary punishment, just, but severe, in all cases of intentional offense. West Point, it will be remembered is the happy institution, for which two of its professors, who last year went on a tour of the colleges, could find no suggestions for improvement.
