AN ambitious Senior, wishing to be thought a Man of Wit as well as a Man of Letters, took English 5 as the best means of attaining his purpose.
The wisdom of his choice was soon shown: his Criticisms were brief and to the point, his General Remarks discursive and comprehensive, his Sarcasms stinging and incisive, - so much so that he was an Object of Hate to all the men in that Elective.
One day, however, the Professor happening to read a theme in which there were several Misspelled Words, two references to Matthew Arnold, a remarkable Mixture of Metaphors, as well as a surprising Lack of Unity, all waited, as they usually did, for a few crushing Remarks from the acute Senior. What was their delight to find him, instead, taking many Notes, blushing to the Roots of his Hair and completely Tongue-tied!
Moral. The best of Critics is not necessarily a good Theme-Writer.
