THE SECOND MEETING OF THE HARVARD BICYCLE CLUB.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

ALTHOUGH last Friday was by no means a favorable day for the Bicycle meeting, about three or four hundred persons assembled on Jarvis Field to witness the races.

The first was the mile-race. R. C. Sturgis, '81, J. A. C. Wright, '81, rode in the first trial-heat; the former winning very prettily in 3 m. 34 3/4 sec.

In the second trial-heat, W. D. Swan, '81, beat F. L. Creesy, '82, by about a third of a lap; coming in easily, in 3 m. 36 1/2 sec.

The track had been divided by lines into three courses, for the one-hundred-yards slow race. - a capital idea, as it prevented fouls, and required skilful riding to keep within the limits, S. Williston, '82, and J. H. Taylor, B. I., started; but the former soon fell off his machine, and the latter simply rode over the course.

The second trial-heat was between J. A. C. Wright, '81, A. J. Abbe, '81, and F. L. Creesy, '82. Wright soon had the track to himself, as his competitors could not keep within their lines.

Messrs. W. H. Herrick, '82, and S. Williston, '82, entered in the mile maiden-race for riders that had never taken a prize. Williston reserved himself till the fourth lap; and then, by a brilliant spurt, he took the lead, and won by a hundred yards, in 3 m. 47 1/2 sec.

The final heat of the mile-race was between Messrs. Swan and Sturgis, '81. The former won by beautiful riding, in 3 m. 22 1/8 sec., - remarkable time, when the bad weather and sharp turns are taken into account.

Messrs. J. H. Taylor, B. I., and J. A. C. Wright, '81, rode in the final heat for the one-hundred-yards slow race. The former won very leisurely, in 4 m. 8 sec.

The last event was a two-mile handicap, for which there were the following entries:-

Yds. Diam. of wheel.

90 A. J. Abbe, '81 50 inches.

75 S. Williston, '82 52 "

50 R. C. Allen, '80 46 "

40 J. A. C. Wright, '81 52 "

Scratch, W. D. Swan, '81 52 "

The race was a pretty one. Swan gradually passed every one but Williston, who had taken the lead; and, for the last two laps, there was a continual spurt between the two. Swan, however, won, by about three feet. Time, 7 m. 30 1/4 sec.

The meeting, on the whole, was the most successful that has been held; and the Bicycle races bid fair to take a permanent place among our college sports.

The following gentlemen acted as officers of the course: Referee, W. R. Thayer, '81; Judges, F. H. Allen, '80, C. A. Parker, '80; Starter, W. Kane, '82; Time-keeper, E. J. Wendell, '82.
