TO THE EDITORS OF THE CRIMSON:-
ALLOW me to call attention to a new grievance in that fertile field of fault finding, the marking system. If an instructor is allowed to send warnings to students for cutting recitations in his elective, the privilege of voluntary recitations, for which the Junior class has to pay so dear, is practically abolished. Recitations are not really voluntary so long as there is a penalty of any sort for absence, and when an instructor, after finding a man absent for several recitations, sends him a notice that he is not likely to get through the course unless his attendance improves, he makes
attendance compulsory, and annuls the privilege which the Faculty has granted. The Faculty would do well to see that while the privilege is not abused by the students, it be not rendered of no effect by the instructors.
