SOFTLY shines the autumn moon, -

Softly, gently, sweetly, brightly;

Ah, it is a precious boon

'Neath its rays to slumber lightly.

Earth and I in the pure beams

All our hurts and griefs are healing;

Nature full of music seems, -

Still so gently o'er me stealing.

Dreamland vaguely seems to float

Like a seaweed on the ocean, -

Seems to rock me like a boat

With an undulating motion;

But I start up from repose

With an agitated feeling,

For that music comes and goes,

Still so gently o'er me stealing.

Vainly do I seek to sink

Dreaming 'neath the wings of Morpheus,

For that music is, I think,

Rivalling the lyre of Orpheus.

Fine musicians! lovely tones

On my tympanum vibrating!

To the centre of my bones

Every note is penetrating.

Cursed assassins! Now I see

That they are those blanked mosquitoes;

They have come to murder me

With their poisonous stilettos.

They have sung their requiem!
