DREAMS.

FROM THE GERMAN.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

I DREAMED of radiant flowers

That blossom in the spring, -

Of meadows fair and fertile,

Where blithe birds sweetly sing.

But when the cocks were crowing

I suddenly awoke,

And, on the roof above me, heard

The raven's dismal croak!

Who, on my frosty window-panes,

Paints those bright vernal leaves?

O, laugh ye at the dreamer

Who thus himself deceives?

A beautiful and loving one,

A maiden fair and coy,

Came in my dream unbidden,

Filling my heart with joy.

But while the cocks were crowing

My heart awakened seemed;

Now here I sit in silence,

Musing on what I dreamed.

Again my eyelids closing,

Sleep cometh like a dove :

When will ye bloom, O flowers?

When wilt thou come, my love?
