Well said, thou thinker bold and free!

O that such thoughts, thou daring man,

Were writ in numbers that would scan.

Thanks for thy word; nor deem it rude,

If thus we show our gratitude:

Submit we will not, from the start,

To verses so devoid of art.

If man, as thy dark musings tell,

Recalls the denizens of hell,

Raise up, at least, with fire and storm,

The demons in their nobler form.

Alas! The fiend of ancient fame

Hath cloven feet and walketh lame!

And, stricken by his noisome curse,

Yet limps and writhes thy luckless verse.
