A GLORIOUS ocean in the sunlit west,

With brilliant clouds of variegated hue, -

Dim, gloomy vales by giant hills oppressed,

Rise from the shore, encompass all the view;

And now the arches lose their flashing gold,

While trembling coral mist conceals from sight

Dim outlined crags that noiselessly are rolled,

Whose silver tinge soon slowly pales to white,

Then lighting as the last rays idly play,

Seem crystal grottos in a moment riven:

Through hazy veils, and vapory clouds of gray,

High towers rise, we catch a glimpse of heaven; -

Now fairy realms seem almost in our touch;

The glories fade, the sun sinks to Tithonus' couch.
