Outing Club Plans Trip to Blue Hills on Saturday; Heavy Schedule this Summer

The Harvard Outing Club last night announced a tentative schedule for the summer, which includes a "beginner's" trip to Blue Hills and grows progressively more strenuous as the participants are conditioned to the exercise.

In former years the Summer School sponsored weekly bus trips and drives to historic spots in the greater Boston area, but the gas and rubber rationing have curtailed this once pleasant pastime for newcomers to Cambridge, and College officials have delegated the Outing Club to entertain the outdoor element this summer.

Arthur O. Lewis, Jr. 2G, graduate secretary, announced that many interesting trips have been planned, which will be open to all members of the summer school. "Remember, these trips are being run especially for the Summer School, so don't be bashful about coming," he said. Women are especially urged to come along on these excursions.

New Ideas Welcome

Lewis expressed the hope that if any person has ideas for trips which have not been announced in the Summer School calendar, the Harvard Outing Club would be delighted to consider them. "Any trip for which there is enough demand will be run if at all possible," he stated.

The first trip sponsored by the Outing Club will be an outing to the Blue Hills next Saturday, July 4, leaving Widener at nine o'clock and returning late in the afternoon. "Our base will be Houghton pond at the foot of Great Blue Hill. The trip is planned to accommodate everyone from the expert to the proverbial hacker'," Lewis declared.

The group will meet on the Widener steps at nine o'clock. Participants are advised to come prepared to walk, "because our bus stops three miles from the pond." Any members, of the Summer School who are anxious to join the outing must put their names on the Sign-Up sheet in Wadsworth House before next Thursday at five o'clock. Late enrollees should bring their own lunch or take a chance on the concessionnaire at the pond. The Outing Club will provide food at cost for those who sign up on time.

Bring Bathing Suit

Lewis explained that the whole trip would be extremely informal, and that after lunch the group will split up into the "swimmers, hikers, and just hang-arounders." A number of hikes of varying length and difficulty will be organized, each led by an Active member of the Club. The last bus leaves the pond at eight o'clock, although it will be possible for those who wish to to leave earlier.

"This is a trip that can be a good conditioner if you plan to do any strenuous hiking later in the summer," he said, "or it can be a good outing if you are interested in having a chance to get into the pen for a while. The total cost, including food and transportation, should not be more than a dollar."

Bicycle Trip Sunday

The trip will be under the general direction of Leonard W. Weiss '44, and Lewis. They can be reached for further information either at the Summer School office in Wadsworth House, or through a note left in the Outing Club box, University Hall A-10.

Sunday, July 6, the Outing Club is conducting a bicycle tour of historic spots in Lexington and Concord, replacing the old tour which was formerly done in buesses. Since it is necessary to reserve bicycles, Lewis asked that those who intend to come along sign up early in Wadsworth House. Further details of this trip will be announced later.
