Stanley Cate Smith '11.

Stanley Cate Smith '11, of West Roxbury, died at his home on August 25. He prepared for College at the Boston Latin and Roxbury Latin Schools. During his Freshman year illness compelled him to leave College, but he regained his class at the mid-year examinations in his Sophomore year, finishing the second half-year in apparent health. A sudden illness, followed by a dangerous operation, resulted in his death.

Clement Lawrence Smith '63.

Clement Lawrence Smith '63, late Pope Professor of Latin, died at Cambridge, July 1, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. He was graduated from Harvard in 1863. He received the degrees of A. B. in 1860, A.M. in 1863, LL.D in 1888, from Haverford College.

He was successively tutor, assistant professor, professor, and Pope Professor of Latin in the University. He was Dean of the College Faculty from 1882 to 1890, Dean of Harvard College from 1890 to 1891, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1898 to 1902.

Simon Newcomb '58.

Simon Newcomb '58, Overseer of Harvard College, died at his home in Washington, D.C., July 11, in the seventy-fifth year of his age. He was graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School in 1858 and three years later was appointed professor of Mathematics in the U.S. Naval Observatory, a position which he held until 1884. From 1873 until 1884 he was lecturer on astronomy and at the latter date was appointed professor of the same subject in Columbian University. From 1877 to 1897 he was director of the Nautical Almanac at Washington, D.C. He was professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University from 1884 to 1900 and professor emeritus of the same subjects from 1900 to 1909. For the year 1879-1880 he was lecturer on Political Economy and was an Overseer of the College from 1906 to 1909.
