All the Houses except Dunster turned off their "aesthetic lighting" last year at the University's request, in order to save energy costs. This year, the Houses still have their aesthetic lights--that is, lights that serve only an aesthetic purpose rather than a crime-stopping one--turned off, but Dunster continues to light its tower every night.

"The line between aesthetic lighting and outside lighting is not as simple as it seems," Dunster Master James Vorenberg '49 said yesterday. "Although the tower light is not an efficient way of lighting, I believe that any lighting is a tool for preventing crime."
