MANY PRIZE CONTESTS CLOSE

Tomorrow is the last day for receiving manuscripts for a number of prize essay contests. Dissertations for the Dante, Sargent, Sumner and Bennett prizes must be handed in. Theses for the three Susan Anthony Potter prizes are also due. One of these of the value of $75 is to be awarded this year for the best essay on a subject dealing with Spanish literature of the Golden Age. This competition is open to all undergraduates of the University and al manuscripts must be handed to the Secretary of the Faculty, University 20. The other two prizes are in comparative literature. One of $100 will be given for the best thesis by a graduate or undergraduate in the University or Radcliffe on any subject in the field of comparative literature which has been approved by the chairman of the department. The other of $50 for the best thesis on a subject in the field of comparative literature concerning the Middle Ages or the Renaissance will be awarded to an undergraduate of the University Theses for the comparative literature prizes are to be submitted to Professor W. H. Schofield.

The Toppan Prize is an annual prize of $150, the gift of Noxan Toppan '58, of Cambridge. It is offered for the best essay on a subject in political science. The prize is open for competition to all students of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, or of any of the professional schools who have received an academic degree, and to all graduates of Harvard College of not more than three years' standing.

Theses for Ph.D. Degree Due.

All candidates for the degree of Ph.D. in 1917, except in the Division of Ancient Languages, of Modern Languages and of History, Government and Economics, must hand in their theses by tomorrow night. Tomorrow is also the last day for receiving applications of candidates for the degree of M.D. or the degree of D.M.D. in 1917. The same date will also be the last for undergraduates and graduate students to hand in their Commencement parts, the last day for receiving applications for the Bullard Fellowships and the Moseley Traveling Fellowship, the last day for receiving applications for Medical School scholarships for 1917-18 (except the Cheever. Haven and Hayden Scholarships), and notice of intention to compete for the Sales and the Jeremy Belknap prizes must be given on or before this date.

Essays for Addison Brown Prize.

Essays are also due for the Addison Brown Prize of $100, awarded from a bequest of Addison Brown '52, late judge of the District Court for the Southern District of New York, for the best essay by a student in the Law School on some designated subject of maritime or private international law, under prescribed regulations. The subjects for 1916-17 are as follows:

(1) The Domicil of a Married Woman.

(2) Taxation of the Corporate Excesses of Interstate Corporations.

(3) A Comparison of the British Marine Insurance Act, 1906, with American Law.

(4) Jurisdiction and Law of Prize Cases.

Students competing are to deliver their manuscripts, typewritten, to the office of the Secretary of the Law School. The prize may be withheld at the discretion of the judges if no essay is found to deserve it. A copy of the winning essay will be placed on file in the Law Library and the Harvard Law Review will probably print the essay.
