The second day of secret practice for the University eleven yesterday showed but little improvement. On end runs, the interference formed more quickly than usual and afforded better protection to the runner, but on line-plunges the backs were so slow that the holes made for them were closed again before they could reach the line and consequently only very short gains were possible. Also, in handling punts the backs were very poor and fumbled frequently.
Graydon played in the line-up for a short time, but was not used much in advancing the ball. Harrison was tried as substitute fullback in place of Meier who is not well and has been sent to Exeter for a week to rest, and to coach the team there. Neither Jones nor Bowditch is yet in condition to do heavy work, but both are expected out by the end of the week. Burgess is disabled temporarily with a strained side.
In the preliminary practice Kernan did some punting, but during the line-up he devoted himself almost entirely to coaching. Others who assisted Coach Farley were J. Dunlop '96, W. Hoag '94, O. F. Cutts 3L., F. D. Cochrane '99, N. W. Cabot '98, W. H. Lewis '95, and J. C. Fairchild '96. Cutts played for a while on the second eleven, alternating against Knowlton and Wright.
The scrimmage between the first and second teams lasted ten minutes, but no touchdown was scored. By formation plays in which Knowlton usually carried the ball, and by end runs by Putnam and Knowles, the second eleven's 12 yard line was reached. Marshall was then called in and standing on the 20 yard line drop-kicked three goals out of four trials. Later on the first team was twice forced to punt and time was called just after the ball had been carried within a few yards of mid-field.
