City May Remove Old Boylston St. Street Car Barns

One of the biggest eyesores and ear-sores in the College area--the Boylston St. car-barns--may be eliminated in the not-too-distant future.

Transportation and planning authorities said yesterday the proposed extension of the Cambridge rapid transit lines may result in the partial or total demolition of the terminal that now stands opposite Eliot and Kirkland Houses. But it will be a couple of years before any tearing down can begin.

Earl B. Myott, Superintendent of Engineers for the Massachusetts Transit Authority, said, "If the system is expanded, it probably would be more profitable or us to operate car-yards out in Arlington."

Earlier, an official of the Cambridge Planning Commission said lands in Arlington had been tentatively reserved for use as a terminal.
