A baseball meeting will be held in the Living Room of the Varsity Club this evening at 7.30 o'clock. All those who have had any previous experience on school teams should not fail to report. Capt. G. E. Abbott '17 will preside and outline the work of the fall season, which will be especially important this year, because Coach Fred Mitchell, last year's baseball head, will be on hand this fall but will be unable to direct the play next spring owing to his contract with Manager Stallings of the Boston Braves. As soon as the Braves are definitely out of the National League race, Mitchell will be on Soldiers' Field every afternoon. Not only is this a rare opportunity for Freshmen especially to get expert coaching, but it is absolutely essential that all who expect to report next spring attend the practice this autumn, with the exception of those engaging in some other branch of fall sport. The season will last as long as the weather permits and a schedule of two or three games a week will be run off.
Owing to the graduation of five of last year's regulars, a lot of new material will have to be worked up and there is an excellent chance for recruits to come out and by the practice this autumn develop into strong contenders for the vacancies on the first team. The graduation of Mahan and Whitney leaves a big hole in the pitching staff to be bolstered up. Also there is a vacancy in the infield left by Nash at first. Fripp and Coolidge's departure weakens the outfield enormously.
With these vacancies in almost every department of the team, some fundamental rebuilding is necessary and it is most important that this be done as far as possible in the fall practice, so that next spring the coaches can devote themselves to finishing off and perfecting the team.
The managership competitions will not start until after mid-years.
